CQI Exam for American Society for Quality (ASQ) Latest Update

CQI Exam for American Society for Quality (ASQ) Latest Update

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has announced significant updates to the Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) examination, set to take effect in May 2025. These changes aim to align the certification with current industry practices and ensure that quality inspectors are well-equipped to meet evolving quality standards.

Updated Body of Knowledge (BoK):

The CQI Body of Knowledge has been revised to reflect the latest advancements in quality inspection. The updated BoK will be implemented starting with the May 2025 testing window. Candidates planning to take the exam during this period should familiarize themselves with the new content to ensure adequate preparation.

Exam Structure and Content:

The computer-based CQI examination remains a one-part, 110-question test, administered exclusively in English. Out of these, 100 questions are scored, while 10 are unscored. The total appointment time is four and a half hours, with 4 hours and 18 minutes allocated for the exam itself. The exam continues to be open book; however, all reference materials must be bound. Loose notes or unbound materials are not permitted in the examination room.

Key Areas of Focus:

The revised BoK emphasizes several critical areas:

  • Technical Mathematics: Proficiency in mathematical concepts applicable to quality inspection.

  • Metrology: Understanding measurement science and the use of various measuring instruments.

  • Inspection and Test: Knowledge of inspection techniques and testing methodologies.

  • Quality Assurance: Familiarity with quality systems, audits, and continuous improvement processes.

Candidates are encouraged to review the detailed BoK to identify specific topics and competencies required.

Preparation Resources:

To aid in preparation, ASQ offers various resources, including the CQI Handbook and Question Bank, which provide sample exam questions aligned with the updated BoK. These materials are designed to help candidates assess their knowledge and focus on areas needing improvement.

Exam Scheduling and Application Deadlines:

The CQI exam is administered during specific testing windows throughout the year. For the May 2025 testing window, the application deadline is April 13, 2025. Candidates should ensure they submit their applications by this date to be eligible for the May exam. ASQ certification examinations are delivered by ASQ's testing partner, Prometric. Upon approval of the application, candidates will receive instructions on scheduling their exam date and location through Prometric's website.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for the CQI certification, candidates must have two years of work experience in mechanical inspection or a related field. Alternatively, successful completion of an ASQ-approved accredited technical or apprenticeship training course is acceptable. Candidates without a high school diploma or GED must have an additional three years of work experience, totaling five years.

Exam Results and Certification:

For exams with updated Bodies of Knowledge, such as the May 2025 CQI exam, ASQ communicates results within four to six weeks after the exam date. Successful candidates will receive details on how to claim their digital certificate and badge through the Accredible platform. Those who do not pass will receive a performance summary and can apply for a retake at a reduced fee within two years of the initial attempt.

Conclusion:

The forthcoming updates to the CQI exam underscore ASQ's commitment to maintaining the relevance and rigor of its certification programs. By aligning the exam content with current industry standards, ASQ ensures that Certified Quality Inspectors possess the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their roles. Candidates are encouraged to utilize the available resources and adhere to application deadlines to achieve success in obtaining their CQI certification.
